Frequently Asked Questions

Bus Service for Bronx High School of Science and High School of American Studies at Lehman College

Q. How are bus routes created? Are they the same every year?

A. No, each year we customize our school bus stops and routes to best accommodate the students we will be transporting for that particular school season. We factor in home addresses and the safest main thoroughfares and snow emergency streets in the area to formulate a convenient and effective school bus route that will enable us to safely bring students to school on time. It is our mission to transport students to and from school in a prompt, professional and reliable manner, just as our family has done for the past 50 years.

Q. What time do students arrive at school?

A. We target our arrival time at the school for somewhere between 7:30 am and 7:45am, and we take into consideration the possibility of traffic and unfavorable weather conditions. This leaves plenty of time for students to arrive before the first bell.

Q. What time are students picked up at school at the end of the day?

A. Our buses are always waiting for your child in their designated area before 9th period dismissal. Students will be advised in advance exactly where these buses are located to avoid any confusion. Regular dismissal time is 3:05 pm, and each child has a reserved seat on their designated bus.

Please note that for students who are in the SGI program, there is a special courtesy bus that departs at 3:50 pm that is designated especially for them. Students can get a reserved seat on an SGI Bus by faxing or emailing a copy of their school program. Our fax is 718-961-7609, or e-mail a copy of your program to In order to be provided with an SGI Reserved Seat, a student's program must indicate "SGI." (All other seats on the SGI Bus are on a first-come, first-served basis and accessible with a regular Vallo bus pass.)

Q. My child may need to stay after regular dismissal. How will they get home on that day?

A. We understand that there are times when a student may need to stay later than regular dismissal time. In fact, we supply additional courtesy buses daily at no additional charge for our students. Please note that seats are limited on "late" buses and are given on a first-come, first served basis, a Vallo bus pass is mandatory.

For students residing in Queens who have Vallo bus passes, there are two late buses each school day — 5:15 pm and 6:05 pm.

For students residing in Manhattan who have bus passes, there are two late buses each school day — 5:30 pm and 6:05 pm.

Q. How do I sign up for transportation through Vallo?

A. Signing up is easy. For each child, we must receive a completed and signed Transportation Contract. These forms are easy to download from our website. Click here if your student resides in Queens or Manhattan. Be sure to check out early registration deadlines for early sign-up.

Q. How is my child issued a Vallo Transportation bus pass?

A. As per our contract every contract year all students must send in a current photo for their Vallo Bus Pass. Once the routes are settled our bus passes will be issued and given to the students by the route drivers.

Q. Do you provide one-way transportation service for students?

A. Yes, however the cost remains the same. All of our transportation contracts include two-way service. When reserving a seat on a bus, it automatically reserves the seat for that child to and from school on that same bus. A customer may choose to have a child only use the service one way.

Q. Who should I contact if I have a question about a current route, change of address or want to request a change?

A. You may submit all questions or requests in writing to Mr. Ralph Potter at

Q. How do you notify customers of any changes or delays?

A. We use a very effective and simple method of communicating with our passengers and parents called EZ texting that allows us to easily send important messages through mobile devices. We encourage our customers to sign up on our website after September 15, 2020 for this service to be sure they receive messages in a timely manner.

Q. Who should I contact if I have questions regarding monthly payments or billing?

A. Marie Rivera from our team is available to address any questions regarding payments. Please contact her directly at

Q. Why does my child's bus go to a different school first?

A. For many years, we have had students from both Bronx High School of Science and High School of American Studies at Lehman College for private transportation services. These schools are conveniently located a mere few blocks from one another, so it's only one extra stop for our bus to make.

In the mornings, buses traveling from Manhattan drop students at High School of American Studies before heading to their final destination at Bronx High School of Science. Buses traveling from Queens stop at Bronx High School of Science first, then drop students at High School of American Studies. We've been performing this protocol for many years, and it's a tried and true method that works for all.

Q. What happens if my child loses their bus pass?

A. That's no problem. The cost to replace the lost bus pass is $50 as stated in our contract. To obtain a new one, the student simply gives the driver a note along with a $50 check. It is imperative that the bus pass be replaced immediately because the students are required to swipe their RFID passes to board a bus. Please note that the student can only ride on their designated bus during this time and cannot ride on the SGI or late bus until a new valid bus pass is reissued.

Q. What if I want to cancel my contract?

A. We understand that unforeseen circumstances may occur and contracts may need to be cancelled. Customers can cancel service at any time and will be subject to an $1,000 forfeiture fee. The contract will be prorated from the date we receive your child's Vallo Bus Pass and the balance (if any due at that time) will be refunded to you within two weeks. Please send an email to Marie Rivera at with details, and she will be happy to assist you.
